Longing for God

By June 2, 2010One Comment

As you may know I lead a Bible study for women brand new to the Bible.  Most of these gals have never owned a Bible before coming to our study – much less read it.  Every thing is new to them.  Everything.

What’s an Old Testament?

What’s a disciple?

Why do we have different denominations?

How do I look up a bible verse?

What’s a Trinity?

And I love it.

Because I love them.

You know what I love most about these women who come in all ages, races, sizes and colors?  I love the fact that though they don’t yet know God, they want to.  And they are willing to risk being a bit (or a lot!) out of their comfort zone to find Him.

Although I don’t know for sure, I’ll bet that since I’m the “bible study leader” they would like to be like me.  But the truth is, I want to be like them.

Their burning desire to find God, to understand what it means to have a relationship with Him and their willingness to wrestle long and hard with their questions in order to know Him, inspires me.  It makes me want to drop to my knees in humility before the Almighty.  It moves my soul.

In his book “The Pursuit of God” A.W. Tozier writes about what he calls “The Fellowship of the Burning Heart”:

“Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat and desire after God. They mourned for Him, they prayed and wrestled and sought for Him day and night, in season and out, and when they had found him the finding was all the sweeter for the long seeking. Moses used the fact that he knew God as an argument for knowing Him better. “Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, show me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight” (Exodus 33:13); and from there he rose to make the daring request, ” I beseech thee, show me the glory” (33:18). God was frankly pleased by this display of ardor, and the next day called Moses into the mount, and there in solemn procession made all His glory pass before him.”

After reading this my dear friend Alicia – a long time Christian – wrote me this email:

Oh my goodness!!! Is that not the ultimate!! Although Moses knew God – and boy did he – he wanted to know him even better and God answered his prayer…and then some!
Does that happen today? Can that happen to us?
He has given me glimpses that cause me to fall to my knees – powerful realizations of His presence – that just bring me to tears; I can’t minimize those incredible events, but for God to make All His Glory pass before us!  I think I would have a heart attack and die…really!   But who am I to limit what God can do for those who truly desire to know Him more?
Alicia is right.

Who are any of us to limit what God can do – and will do – for those who truly desire to know Him more.
Do you want to see God’s glory?  Then long for Him with the longing of the soul newly yearning to taste the things of God for the very first time.
Then stand and watch for His great and awesome glory to touch your life.
