Book Give Away Winner and How to Talk to Yourself (because we all do!)

By October 7, 2015No Comments

Do you ever talk to yourself?  I do. In fact, I’m famous for talking to myself as I work.  Two of my kids share my funny little habit (one boy, one girl, so I guess it isn’t a gender thing).  But today I spoke with a customer service rep who took talking to one’s self to a whole new level.  I had her on speaker phone and the running dialogue she had with herself literally had me covering my mouth to muffle my giggles.

I’d never heard anything like it.  It was hysterical.  I pictured customer after customer listening to her recount every action and every thought while she had absolutely no idea she was doing it.  I hung up the phone with a smile.

And an insight.

Really, we all talk to ourselves.  Some of us just talk to ourselves out loud.

Most of us aren’t even aware we do it.

If others could hear what we say to ourselves what would they hear?  Would it be positive or negative?  Truth filled or full of vain imaginations?  Encouraging or discouraging? Filled with worry or filled with faith?  Thankful or dissatisfied?  Full of regret over the past or hope for the future?

Yes, indeed.  We all talk to ourselves.  But if we want any chance at peace, any hope of joy or any shot at a fulfilling future, we have to talk to ourselves the right way. God’s way.

In an effort to talk to myself God’s way, below I’ve listed five Bible verses I’m allowing to simmer in my brain this week.  I figure as long as I talk to myself, I might as well tell myself the truth.

  1. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Phil 4:13)
  2. God causes all things to work together for the good of those who love him, for those who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)
  3. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us (me!) from God’s love. (Romans 8:38-39)
  4. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12)
  5. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.(Galatians 6:9)
