Just Do It

By November 15, 2010No Comments

Sometimes life gives you stuff you just have to do.

Young or old. Rich or poor.  Thin or not so much, some days we simply must take a deep breath and do what we don’t really feel like doing.  Why?  Because deep in our hearts we know the result is worth it.

Those monotonous, dreadful tasks that simply have to be done have a purpose.  They really do.

The laundry has to be done.  The dishes have to be washed.  The lunches have to be made.  The errands have to be run.  The bills have to  be paid.  The bottom has to be wiped.  The emails have to be returned.  The carpool has to be driven.  Why?  So you and those you love can do what God created them to do.  All this stuff is stuff to help us do the other, important stuff.

Huh?

Your husband has to have clean clothes so he can smell good enough to earn a living.  Your kids have to have lunch so their brains can focus at school.  The carpool has to be driven so your little ones can be involved in things that will develop their character (and so you can eavesdrop on their conversations).  The bills have to be paid so you can have a roof over your head.

And all this stuff is really just stuff so that you can have a life.

What in the world made me think of this?  A picture on my daughter’s Facebook wall.

Thinking back to my college days I remember the friends, the roommates, the fun and the classes.  I remember the  experience.  I remember the life.  But there was other stuff that somehow my memory had erased – until seeing today’s Facebook picture.  There were note-cards and midterms, all nighters and finals.  There were evenings spent typing till dawn (and no backspace button to magically erase the mistakes!)  There was lots of stuff I didn’t feel like doing, but did anyway.

Was it to get an education?  Yes.  But it was more than that.  It was to have an education.   In life.

Because life is filled with stuff you just have to do.

And I think Kylie might just be learning that lesson this week…..
