“So who exactly are we supposed to pray to—the Father, the Son or the Holy Spirit?”
This insightful question was asked by one of the gals in our Seek Bible study taking place at my church on Monday night. It’s a question I’ve been asked before and it’s a good one.
We all have God questions, don’t we? Many of us, however, don’t really have anyone to ask.
Except now you do. Let that person be me. If I don’t know the answer I can just about guarantee my husband will. Our family fondly refers to him as “The Bible Answer Man” (if you know JP, you know why!) and probably half of what I know about God I learned from him. So here’s the deal: every week I’m going to deal with a “God question” on my blog. If you have a burning question that you’ve always wondered about, consider this your chance to finally learn the answer. It’s as simple as leaving your question in the comment portion of the blog. Or send me an email. Just ask.
So…now on to the answer to the question above.
You can pray to all three. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all involved in our prayer life. Personally, I direct my prayer according to what I’m praying about. For instance, I might pray “Jesus, I blew it. Please forgive me”, since Jesus is the forgiver of my sins. I might pray “Holy Spirit, I need your guidance right now” since the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is our guide, our counselor and our comforter. I might pray “Father, thank you for all you have given me” since the Bible says “that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father.”
Ultimately, though, all that matters is that you pray. Prayer is simply talking to God.
But there’s more…God wants you to pray to Him, but did you know that God prays for you?
That’s right. Jesus prays to the Father on your behalf every day (Romans 8:34). And the Holy Spirit prays for you when you are so weak so can’t even put two sentences together, much less form a coherent prayer (Romans 8:26).
Let your mind wrap around this truth for a minute. God the Son and God the Holy Spirit pray for you if you are a believer. Kind of mind blowing and cool, isn’t it? Right now you may be in a circumstance where you need prayer the way you need water. God knows. And get this – He’s already praying for you because He loves and cares for you that much.
As you let that incredible truth sink in, you might want to bow your head right now and just say a simple prayer back to Him. Two words will do.
“Thank you”.
Love it!
