Content With Life “As Is”

By May 8, 2010No Comments

When I was a kid I remember my mom telling me “people often want what they can’t have”.

While this is a pretty sad commentary on the human condition, I have found that generally it rings pretty true.  If you need a little convincing  just recall the last time you tried to lose weight.  How hard was it to say no to a forbidden cookie?

I rest my case.

Why am I thinking about this anyway?  Well, Sunday is Mother’s Day. When my kids were young I remember longing for just a little “me” time.  No noise.  No “mommy, come here quick!”  No one hanging onto one of my body parts.  All I really wanted was just a little peace and quiet, thank you very much.

Now two of my three kids are in college.  Only one is left at home and the house is much quieter, the laundry much lighter (OK, so this one isn’t so bad…) and the carpooling much easier.  But do I like it?  Well…..not really.

I miss the noise.  I miss the parade of friends.  I miss the wacky family dinner times.  I miss it all.  And boy, oh boy, am I glad Ashton has four more years with us!

But….in a few minutes Taylor will walk in the door.  Tomorrow afternoon Kylie comes home, too.  The five of us will be together again and I can hardly wait!!

So, for once I won’t want what I don’t have.  I’ll be content with life just as it is right now.  It’s been said that contentment comes not from getting what you want but rather, from wanting what you already have.

Amen sisters!

For I have learned the secret of being content in every situation…..for I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” Phillippians 4:12-13
