How Helpful is Multi-Tasking….Really???

By November 15, 2010No Comments

I have a confession.  My name is Donna and I’m a multi-tasker.

I almost can’t stand not doing two things at once.  I’ve grown so accustomed to multi-tasking that any other way of operating seems unproductive.  But is it really?

Today I found out why multi-tasking isn’t always the best option.

I was out running errands around lunch time and got hungry, so I pulled into a fast food drive-thru lane to grab a quick bite. (I even eat and drive at the same time.  Told you I’m addicted to multi-tasking.)   While waiting to order I decided to make a phone call. (Again, multi-tasking.)  But I became so distracted with my call that I drove right past the menu board without ordering.  Imagine my shock when I got to the window to pick up my food and remembered that I hadn’t even ordered!

I laughed all the way back to the end of the drive-thru line.

Sometimes it really doesn’t pay to multi-task. Sometimes the best thing we can do is focus on one thing at a time.

Like listening to our child.

Or being fully present with our husband.

Or tuning out distractions to read God’s word and pray.

Or resolving a conflict

Or caring for a friend.

Yes, multi-tasking has become a way of life for most women.  I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in my struggle to do two things at once.  But let’s make sure than in our quest to “do it all” we don’t forget what’s really important.

Even if it’s ordering lunch.
